Championing the Right to Learn: Join Our Higher Education for Refugees Policy Hackathon on World Human Rights Day

World Human Rights Day is a moment to reaffirm the fundamental rights of every individual. This year, Fugee HiEd is teaming up with UNHCR’s Refugee Advisory Board to address a critical issue: the right of refugees to access higher education.

We are excited to announce: Higher Education: A Right Denied to Refugees, Panel Discussion and Policy Hackathon!


Why This Event Matters

The event is designed to ignite change by bringing together passionate university students particularly those involved in student unions or actively advocating for inclusive education: to connect, strategize, and co-create solutions.

Our Core Objectives:

  • Raise Awareness: Increase public awareness about the right of refugees to access higher education.

  • Inspire Action: Encourage Malaysian university students to support inclusion efforts within both local public and private universities.

  • Share Real Stories: Present the real educational achievements and lived experiences of refugee scholars.

  • Develop Solutions: Foster concrete ideas, partnerships, and commitments for long-term systemic change.

We believe that by mapping the current refugee higher education landscape and hearing from refugee scholars, students will be the most well-positioned to drive change within their universities.

What Will Happen on the Day?

Participants will engage in a dynamic Policy Hackathon to co-create practical solutions to advance refugee access to universities. Following the Hackathon, we will host a crucial Pledge Moment to sustain the momentum and commit to the initiatives crafted collectively.
