Improving Life Outcomes for
Refugees in Malaysia

BY AND WITH REFUGEES

Refugees in Malaysia

According to UNHCR, there are

192,000+ refugees in Malaysia
 56,000+ are children
>70% (38,000+) have no access to education

As Malaysia is not signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, the over 192,000 refugees in Malaysia, including 56,000 children, are denied access to legal employment, education, and healthcare. Many live in fear and exploitation across various sectors. Because Malaysia is a transition country for refugees awaiting resettlement, a process that can take years, they face a daily struggle for dignity and survival.

It is by the intervention of UNHCR Malaysia, local NGOs, and social enterprises that refugee communities are able to thrive in these unstable conditions. These organisations play a crucial role in addressing current gaps and advocating for an inclusive national policy framework.

About Us

Fugee Org is a leading non-profit recognised by UNHCR focused on improving life outcomes for refugees in Malaysia, by providing education services and beyond.

What began as tuition for 4 Somali siblings has grown into Fugee School, empowering over 700 refugee students, and the Fugee HiEd Scholarship, supporting 50+ refugee youth in higher education. From primary school to higher education, Fugee provides a comprehensive educational journey, equipping refugee youth with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to become agents of change in their communities.

Together with dedicated partners, Fugee creates a world where every refugee youth has access to transformative education, building brighter futures for themselves and their communities.

What We Do & Why We Do It

Fugee School is a refugee learning centre recognised by UNHCR Malaysia. As a space that nurtures safety and value-based education for refugee children, Fugee School helps children grow and enjoy their childhood and youth regardless of the challenges they face.

At the tertiary level, students struggle to gain enrolment into Universities due to financial burden and lack of information. Thus, Fugee is committed to supporting students by bridging the educational gap by ensuring that they are equipped with resources and guidance to a brighter future.

Our Fugee HiEd Scholarship and youth programmes aim to tackle these issues and increase graduation rates. Education is important for refugee children to assimilate into society, improve individual well-being and gain financial stability.

Vision

Today, we want every child and youth who goes through the Fugee system to achieve socio-economic stability, develop essential life skills, and aspire to shape their own future.

Mission

To ensure all refugee children and youth have access to a quality education, holistic support, and opportunities that empower them to build a future of dignity and purpose.
