A few days ago there was a string of media articles which highlighted that the Malaysian National Security suggested shutting down the UNHCR office in Malaysia to manage refugees themselves.

Fugee Founder, Deborah Henry commented on the situation stating "We encourage and support the Malaysian government wanting to get more involved as it is our duty. However it is a gradual process, that takes time and understanding. Effective changes must only be implemented while maintaining security, adhering to international guidelines and human rights principles - while working with key stakeholders on ground."

Not all Government representatives are in support of such a proposal. The Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, recently publicized that they were currently working alongside various NGOs to publish a status paper on ensuring children in Alternative Learning Centers receive the proper education.

For now, there are still no definitive plans on closing UNHCR Malaysia for the foreseeable future.
