Fugee Org and Doctors on Ground's Commitment to Strengthening Healthcare for Refugees

March 22, 2025 - Kuala Lumpur

In an effort to expand medical accessibility to the refugee community, Fugee Org has strengthened its commitment to refugee healthcare by collaborating with Doctors on Ground, a non-profit organization with a dedicated mission to provide accessible healthcare services to disadvantaged communities.

Recognizing the ongoing barriers refugees face in obtaining medical care, such as distance, safety concerns, financial constraints, and lack of facilities, Fugee Org and Doctors on Ground have been working together to address this gap. As part of this initiative, on March 22, 2025, the organizations held a medical outreach event at Fugee School, which is located near refugee communities to ensure accessibility.

The event provided health screenings, medical consultations, essential medical support, and prescriptions directly to refugees, including students, parents, and staff. A total of 116 refugees signed up for the programme, and 56 of them were able to attend, reflecting the urgent need for accessible healthcare within the community. By providing healthcare to those who need it most, the programme seeks to eliminate medical obstacles that refugees face in seeking proper medical attention.

“The school’s commitment to not just education but holistic support for their students and community members created a noticeably more structured and prepared environment. The team at Fugee did an excellent job facilitating the entire outreach,” said Arissa Jemaima, Founder & Executive Director, Doctors on Ground.

Beyond this initiative, the Refugee Medical Insurance (REMEDI) was introduced to simplify patient records and guarantee ongoing medical assistance outside of one-time treatments.

“In addition to medical screenings, this event also served as a platform to introduce Refugee Medical Insurance (REMEDI) to the community. Recommended by UNHCR, REMEDI is designed to help refugees overcome financial barriers to healthcare, making medical treatment more accessible and sustainable.- Anna, Head of Well-Being at Fugee Org.

The impact of the initiative was evident, as over 95% of beneficiaries found the medical screenings and consultations beneficial, with many beneficiaries expressing their gratitude for the access to healthcare, which would have otherwise been difficult to reach.

"I am truly grateful for the medical outreach programme. It provided me and my family with essential healthcare services that we otherwise would have struggled to afford,"  said Ms. Javeria, a beneficiary of the programme.

Recognising the need for medical accessibility, Fugee Org is committed to expanding the Medical Outreach programme into a recurring initiative, hosting similar programmes every academic term to ensure continuous healthcare access for refugee communities.

"To ensure our students' development is holistic—not just academically, but in all aspects of their well-being, including physical health—we initiated this Medical Outreach in partnership with Doctors on Ground," said Anna, Head of Well-Being at Fugee Org

By bridging education with healthcare, Fugee Org extends its mission beyond academics, assuring a holistic approach to refugee wellbeing. This approach aligns with a broader goal of not only promoting academic excellence, but promoting the overall health and well-being of students and the broader refugee population in Malaysia.
