This year marks a monumental milestone for the Fugee family. We have successfully moved into a bigger and better space—a four-storey building that is already transforming the educational experience for refugee children in Malaysia.
It’s a moment that makes us pause and reflect on just how far we’ve come.
From our humble beginnings in a single apartment to adapting across shoplots, our growth was fueled by the critical, unmet need for quality, structured education. Now, our dedicated centre is designed to replace demanding half-day sessions with full-day, consistent learning, offering students richer opportunities.
This World Human Rights Day, Fugee HiEd and UNHCR’s Refugee Advisory Board are bringing Malaysian university students together to rethink how refugees can access higher education in Malaysia!
A new needs assessment by Fugee Org, "Striving for Education in Unreasonable Circumstances," delivers a stark analysis of the crisis facing Malaysia's estimated 59,250 refugee children. Excluded from the national system due to government policy and lack of legal status, these children rely on informal Alternative Learning Centres (ALCs).
The report reveals an alarming reality: only about 35% of registered school-age children are enrolled, a gap sustained by systemic barriers including financial hardship, security threats, and registration delays. The ALCs themselves are struggling against a chronic lack of funding, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified teachers and materials.
The study concludes with a powerful call for coordinated action, outlining six key recommendations across four focus areas.
We are excited to announce two major collaborations with incredible homegrown Malaysian brands: The Serai Group and Coffeeboy Club, that make supporting refugee empowerment as easy as ordering your favorite drink, whether you're sitting down for a family meal or grabbing a quick coffee on the go.
At Fugee School, our mission goes beyond academic education; it’s about nurturing an environment where every child feels secure, respected, and understood. We firmly believe that a child’s right to a safe space is non-negotiable. This commitment was recently strengthened through two parallel, vital initiatives conducted by our dedicated partners, Humankind.
